Built by eRide Waiheke, Led by Mark Seavill
Waiheke Guide was developed by Mark Seavill, founder of eRide Waiheke, after years of helping thousands of visitors explore Waiheke Island from the Matiatia Ferry Terminal.
Through eRide Waiheke’s daily visitor operations, Mark and the team saw the same challenges again and again. Visitors needed safer route guidance, clearer local information, multilingual support, better transport advice and easier ways to discover Waiheke’s beaches, villages, vineyards, walking trails and local experiences.
Waiheke Guide was created to solve that problem.
It is more than a digital map or visitor brochure. It is a practical visitor platform built from real tourism experience on Waiheke Island.
Informed by Real Visitor Behaviour
Waiheke Guide is shaped by what visitors actually use and need.
Through Waiheke Guide analytics and eRide Waiheke’s daily visitor operations, Mark Seavill and the team can see how visitors engage with e-bike routes, walking trails, bus information, maps, stories, language options, “Near Me” discovery and local business listings.
This helps the Guide keep improving over time. If visitors are searching for walks, opening bus routes, reading place-based stories, using maps, viewing arts and culture content, or looking for nearby places, those insights help show what information visitors really need while they are on the island.
In the 2025/26 season, eRide Waiheke supported more than 12,700 rider experiences and over 357,000 kilometres of low-emission visitor travel. Alongside this, Waiheke Guide usage shows strong demand for mobile-first visitor information across routes, walks, transport, stories, languages and local discovery.
Together, these insights give Waiheke Guide a practical real-world foundation. It is not built from guesswork. It is shaped by how visitors actually move, search, read, ride, walk and explore Waiheke.
Supporting Safer, Lower-Impact Tourism
Waiheke Guide helps visitors make better decisions.
By encouraging clearer routes, better planning and more confident self-guided travel, the Guide supports safer movement around the island and helps visitors discover more without relying only on cars or ad hoc transport.
For Waiheke, this matters.
Better visitor guidance can support:
- Safer travel choices
- Better visitor dispersal
- More visibility for local businesses
- Lower-emission ways to explore
- Stronger visitor understanding of the island
- Better destination planning over time
Waiheke Guide is part of eRide Waiheke’s wider commitment to visitor experience, sustainability and practical tourism innovation.
Built on Waiheke, Designed to Travel
Waiheke Guide was created for Waiheke Island, but the model can be adapted for other visitor destinations.
The platform combines local storytelling, multilingual visitor guidance, route planning, business visibility and destination insights in one mobile-friendly system.
Mark Seavill and the eRide Waiheke team have developed practical expertise in visitor movement, route design, e-bike tourism, low-emission travel, digital maps, visitor safety and local business engagement. That knowledge can support other destinations where visitors need simple, local and mobile-friendly guidance.
This includes island destinations with ferry arrivals, walking trails, scenic routes, cultural stories, local operators, transport links and visitor dispersal challenges.
The team is already exploring how this approach could support other island destinations, including Rarotonga, where visitors face similar challenges around navigation, transport, local discovery and coordinated tourism information.
Waiheke Guide was built from real operational experience. That is what makes it valuable: it connects visitor experience, local business outcomes and destination insight in one practical system.
