Sustainability

eRide is a family run business renting high-quality e-bikes for visitors to travel around and experience Waiheke Island.

The bikes have to cater to a wide range of riders and suitable for Waiheke’s varied terrain, including gravel roads. As a responsible tourism operator, eRide wants to measure its carbon footprint so it knows where it can do more to reduce it.

The business is already an active ambassador for the Tiaki Promise and Qualmark Gold certified.

This is eRide’s carbon footprint for the year 2024-25.

Consciously choose higher quality e-bikes designed for repairability and upgradability to maximise bike lifespan and reduce waste.

Encourage customers to drop ebikes back to the eRide depot to avoid using the diesel vehicle to collect bikes from across the Island.

Use an electric van to transport our customers, when they need a pick up or drop off.

Support a second-hand market of high-quality e-bikes to help others embrace active transport and reduce their emissions more affordably.

Minimise waste and separate all materials that can be recycled.

In 2022, eRide moved its main premises to Matiatia to minimise transport of bikes and customers, whilst improving customer convenience.

Partner with suppliers that take social and environmental sustainability seriously, with appropriate policies in place.

In 2023, eRide introduced an app based map to reduce printing and waste, with associated cost reductions.

The bulk of eRide’s footprint arises from the manufacture of e-bikes, batteries and components offshore.

The majority of waste comes from packaging of the e-bike and components.

eRide is a small business with no meaningful opportunities to influence large offshore manufacturers. We have, however, provided people with an option to ride an e-bike on Waiheke island instead travelling by a car or a bus, which results in lower emissions.

eRide’s bikes travelled 250,000 km in FY 23-24. 340,000 km in FY 24-25

Reduce frequency of fleet replacement by actively refurbishing and upgrading bikes. This will also have financial benefits for the business.

Actively review market availability of suitable e-bikes that have a lower environmental footprint.

Encourage customers to plan their trips so e-bikes are ridden back to Matiatia, avoiding the need to transport them with the diesel vehicle.

Encourage our customers to use the bikes mindfully and efficiently so that the bike parts and components last longer.

Continue discussions with suppliers to maximise options for reducing waste at source.
